2020 Eröffnungsblog: Rugon wird 2 und wir sagen Goodbye! #Clickbait

Moin Leute,

Was mich zum eigentlichen Punkt bringt → Dem Rework.

Gameplay:

Warcraft und League of Legends.

Also lasst uns eure Stimmen hören. :)

Rugon becomes 2 and we say goodbye!#Clickbait

Hi there folks,
it’s been a while since I wrote my latest blog entry (Nico). I believe the topic then was story. This time it’s a more serious matter, a rework of Rugon.
But before I start, there’s something to celebrate: Rugon turns 2.

On 1/25/2018 we published Rugons name. It’s been two years now. At that time we were pretty sure we’d finish Rugon that same year… that went down like a lead balloon. Our ambitions were too great and we didn’t have enough insight into the machinery that is game development. Still, we’re happy we got this far. I believe that we, as a team as well as as individuals, improved greatly which will lead to Rugon becoming a better game that we could have made initially.

Which brings me to the main topic today → The rework.
Why, how, where and what we achieved until now and a small insight into our heads.

At the beginning of the alpha we told ourselves: 1 patch every week. We pulled that off for about half a year via small patches. In the beginning we were pretty comfortable with that. But after a while we felt that wasn’t sustainable any more. We realized the cycle put us into a tight spot, forcing us to focus on small improvements instead of big changes, thus hurting the whole development. Then, after Gamescom 2019, we tested a cycle of 1 patch per month, which worked much better and the features we added felt more fitting for the game. But this workflow was broken rather quickly thanks to our second project, Vaktavars Hope. Don’t misunderstand, Vaktavars Hope is a great opportunity for us. But again, we miscalculated. After receiving our incentives, we planned to work at both projects simultaneously for 4 months. Again a drought… we’re still working on Vaktavars Hope, although we’re getting close to the finish line.

However, Vaktavars Hope was important in granting us the chance to take a broader, iterative look at Rugon and analyze where we did things right and wrong. Thus, since mid-November, we started talking about Rugon and its present state. One point became pretty clear pretty fast: the high amount of occasions where we were compared with our Gamescom competition. At first we were only talking about the visuals, although slowly but surely gameplay crept into the discussion. The other two points that became part of the discussion were the workload and our responsibility towards you, the community.

Responsibility towards the community:
I believe we should clarify that first because we always emphasize we want to create a game for the community. With ~400 people on our Discord server, we’re no longer a small circle. We’re worrying about what, in case of a rework, will become of those who like Rugon the way it is.  We came to the conclusion that in spite of our concerns, the rework is the right way forward. That’s for many reasons, but the biggest one is Rugons present uniqueness, or better lack thereof, to really distinguish itself in the mountain of card games on the market.

Workload:
Many will say: But Nico, a rework is more workload than finishing the game. Well, not completely true. One of the rework’s goals is to reduce workload by setting objectives that our small team is able to handle. This will cause systems to rely less on content and more on dynamics.

Gameplay:
What gameplay changes will be made? To be honest… we don’t know yet. The only 3 changes set in stone are:
    - We’ll reduce the card pool from ~200 to ~50
    - The decks will be much smaller
    - The leveling system will remain in one way or the other

Art/Visuell:
Stylewise, until now we have oriented ourselves by the games we like and love, e.g. Warcraft and League of Legends. In our eyes, that’s nothing bad, everyone is inspired by something. But the companies behind those games have something we’re lacking: money. To, for example, outsource 150 new artworks, like Hearthstone did. We simply can’t keep up in that regard and speaking long term, we won’t be able to handle the artstyle we aspire to achieve. That’s why we’ll do a complete visual overhaul with an artstyle that suits our needs.

All in all, the goal is to develop a game our small team will be able to handle until release, that will be as or much more fun that Rugon in its present state and looks visually distinct.

With all that being said, and with mixed feelings, I proclaim that Rugon has experienced its final patch on 12/22/2019.
But the Rugon we all know will live on - online. To realize that for you, we want to know on which patch you’d like to play Rugon in the future. We’ll have a poll on Discord soon, where you can choose between 0.0.19 and 0.0.20, with the main difference being which experience system is implemented. (0.0.19 = old experience system, 0.0.20 = new experience system).
Therefore, make a vote and voice your opinions. :)

During the rework process we will show updates from time to time. And, most importantly, we will involve you, our community, into the development process once the initial work is done.
In the end we can only say that we’re in good spirits concerning the rework and that we’re looking forward to walk this new path together with you!
